The Importance of a ‘Selfie’

As a photographer, it would seem amiss to not talk about the ever-so-popular ‘selfie,’ which has recently been named Word of the Year by the Oxford Dictionary. While I think the idea of taking a selfie is a bit polarizing these days, I love the idea of capturing who you are and what you look like in an exact moment in time. I have been taking self portraits since 2006 when I purchased my first Apple laptop. I used the Photobooth feature to easily snap photos of myself, way before the term ‘selfie’ was coined. It is a great way to capture exactly where you are in a certain time in your life. Unfortunately, the ‘duck-face’ and ‘cell phone in the mirror’ shots have given the selfie a bad wrap, but it doesn’t have to be that way. there are lots of ways to capture a self-portrait and capture the beauty of you and your surroundings.

Here are a few tips the next time you’re taking a photo of yourself:

– Make sure you step away from the mirror so you can’t see the reflection of your phone. Use the timer on your phone (if your phone doesn’t have a timer, several apps offer this feature).

– Bend your arm and point the phone downwards to avoid getting your arm in the photo.

– Look away, and then look back at the camera before taking the photo to avoid a posed and contrived look.

– Avoid using a flash. Use natural light instead. Look for where the light is coming from.

– I understand you might need to take several to get a shot you’re happy with, but avoid putting all of them on social media. Pick your favorite one or two to share.

– Hold the phone above you a bit; this will give you a flattering angle.

The ultimate goal is to not make it look like you took the photo. Here are some of my favorite selfies that I have taken over the years.

Who inspires your work?

Regardless of your profession it is important to keep learning and stay inspired. One way I do that is by following other photographers from all over the globe. My list of favorite photographers is ever-changing; namely growing, as I am exposed to other artists who share my love for capturing life’s precious moments. I want to share a few of my favorite and most inspiring photographers and why I admire each one. I encourage you to check out their work and also reflect on what inspires you to do better in your profession.

Christopher Morris | VII Photo Agency | Editorial, Photojournalism, Video
I had the pleasure of interning with VII Photo Agency years ago and I worked closely with Christopher Morris’ images. During my time there I was able to study his work and grew very fond of the way he captured people in his photographs. Through his eyes and camera lens, I believe Christopher sees his subjects from a different prospective than the rest of the world and that is always perfectly captured in his photographs.

Ackerman + Gruber | Editorial, Commercial, Wedding, Video
Jenn Ackerman is one half of this powerhouse duo and I just love her documentary photography style. The way she captures light and color is so inspiring. No matter what she photographs, her images are always so vivid and leave you wanting more of the story; which to me is the true essence of documentary photography. To entice and explain; she does this so amazingly well.

Client Testimonial – UW Navy ROTC

I learned about Beth through her exceptional work with Oregon Marching Band. The Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps (NROTC) at the University of Wisconsin was in need of someone to document the training and events our members’ experience. Throughout the process Beth was very professional and easy to work with. The images she captured of the NROTC Midshipmen enhanced the ability to share our story. Her work is of amazing quality and we have asked her to come back for multiple events. I would definitely refer her work.

Helping Make a Wish Come True

Helping others is really what makes the world go ‘round. One organization that’s mission is just that is the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Madison. I recently partnered with this amazing organization and offered my services to capture Darien’s Make-A-Wish journey. Darien is a 14-year-old boy who is battling a rare autoimmune disease called histiocytosis. This is the second time Darien has faced this battle since his first diagnosis in 2011. Although young, Darien was quite an athlete and when he started experiencing leg and hip pain, doctors first attributed it to a sports-related injury. Doctors were able to help Darien beat the disease, but six months later it returned and he now is receiving monthly chemotherapy treatments.

What keeps Darien going is his love for Badger sports, namely Badger Football. Darien’s wish? A Wisconsin Badger-inspired room makeover. A good friend of mine, Nancy from Pure + Simple Designs, mentioned that she was providing the room makeover and I knew I wanted to get involved and capture this journey for Darien. And not only did Darien get a Badger-inspired room makeover, he spent time with the football players each day during the makeover; talking, throwing around a football and inspiring the players, no doubt. And the icing on the cake? A private tour of Camp Randall by two Badger football players, Ray Ball and Derek Watt. Head coach, Gary Anderson, met with Darien and gave him a signed helmet and tickets to the first game of the season!

This was truly an experience of a lifetime for Darien and I was honored to be a part of it. Thank you Nicole from Make-A-Wish for letting me document such an amazing few days. Take a look at some of the photos from this very special Make-A-Wish experience.

The Big Ten Network was also there with cameras! I’ll include a link to their video once it’s up.

Side Note: Badger football players were there even though it may not look like it from the images posted here. Make-A-Wish is the only organization with permission to use images of them since they are a non-profit.

Shadow Armada Winterguard and Indoor Percussion 2013

This was my first year documenting the Oregon High School winter program. I traveled with the Shadow Armada Winterguard to Indiana for a weekend and with Shadow Armada Indoor Percussion to Dayton, Ohio for another weekend. Both groups were incredible!

See all of the photos from the winter season here.

Ginny

This family is so near to my heart. I photographed their youngest child’s birth about two years ago in their home and have become close with them since. I remember waking up at 4am and having the urge to look at my phone. I scrolled down the Facebook newsfeed and saw the first post she published announcing the horrible horrible news. I couldn’t believe it. They found out that Ginny has cervical cancer. She’s been keeping a very personal blog about her whole experience. http://cisnotforcookie.blogspot.com/

After going through treatment year and not going to the doctor for a few months, she went back in for an appointment and they found that the cancer spread. She texted me the day she went in and said, “We are going to need family photos, asap”. Right away I couldn’t breath. In all honesty, I didn’t know if I could keep it together in front of them. The next day I went to their home and simply documented their everyday life. These are such perfect and genuine moments that they’ll be able to look back at and smile : )

The next week Ginny donated her hair. I would have been there to photograph for them, but I was headed for Austin, Texas. I definitely choked up looking at her blog post from that day, but man, she looks gorgeous. She’s a strong woman and I have no doubt that she’ll beat this.

One of Ginny’s friends started a website called, “Cancer Cell Sale” where people can purchase Ginny’s cancer cells so she can have less to fight.
