It’s going to be a slow recovery, but my mom is one of the strongest people I know.

My Mom’s Surgery
This is the hardest thing I’ve been a part of in a while. My mom had surgery today and even though it was really hard to see her be taken down the hall on a stretcher for surgery, I kept thinking, “This is a good surgery, a happy surgery.” If you have seen my mom in the previous posts, you’ve noticed that she didn’t have an easy time in Norway.
Last June she had hip resurfacing surgery on her right hip. She recovered very well and even got back on the court to play tennis; a sport she has always loved playing. A few months later, she had to stop playing again because her left hip began giving her trouble. After seeing an acupuncturist, and going completely gluten, egg, and dairy free, she thought she might be able to put off a second surgery.
Three weeks before the Norway trip, things went down hill. Her hip became worse and worse, to the point of using crutches and eventually needing a wheelchair. Thank goodness she had the surgery! For those of you who don’t know my mom, she is a very busy; a go getter you could say… Playing tennis, lunch dates, Mahjong with girlfriends…She always has things to do and people to see.
She is out of surgery and will slowly begin the recovery process. I’m sleeping with her tonight at the hospital. And she moves to Hip Hab on Saturday (A retirement community with a few condos for recovering hip resurfacing patients). I’m going to bring Novus in for a visit!
End of Norway ’09, Back to Wisconsin
Norway was a great trip!! I’m so happy that everyone was able to go so we could all spend time together, which happens maybe once a year.
I hate saying goodbye. They’re always hard for me because I hate not knowing when (or if) I’ll see someone again.
Thanks for reading and looking at the photos from the trip!
Cheers!!
Bergen, Norway
We took a 3 hour tour of Bergen in the morning. The last stop was to Norwegian composer, Edvard Grieg’s house. Thank goodness we got free white ponchos last night…it rained, again.
We went to the acvarium in Bergen too. I think I could watch penguins all day.
Bergen, Norway
213 days out of the year, it rains in Bergen. We walked around during the day, but it was just too wet to be running around taking pictures. So, unfortunately, the only image of a family member, is of Dave, looking awesome as always. : )
After dinner, we walked a few blocks to the cultural festival. First, there was a salsa band…of course I danced, but only for a few minutes with Nathan. We were about to leave until people started filling in to see the next act. The audience was packed with teenage girls…maybe it would be a good performance. We decided to stay to watch the hip hop dance group. I immediately went to the front of the crowd by the stage to take photos.
After the dance crew, I heard that the next act was even better. Everyone else wanted to leave, but I had to stay and take a few more photos. About 5 guys came out wearing nothing but their underwear to do an acrobatic performance. We stayed for another 20.
My Brother, Dave.
A little something fun when we got to the hotel in Balestrand. This is the view from our balcony.
Fjærland – Bøyrum Glacier
Our second day spent in Balestrand began by taking a small boat through the Sognefjord to Fjærland, which is nestled at the base of Bøyrum Glacier located in the shadows of the Jostedalbreen Range. We weren’t able to touch the ice, but we had a pretty nice view of the ice on the mountain.
I’ve included a snapshot of the hotel where we are staying in Balestrand at the foot of the mountains on the fjord.
Leave Geilo, Train to Myrdal, Boat to Flåm and Balestrand
Today was the prettiest day so far in the entire trip; traveling by bus, train and boat! I’m not going to include much text in this post… I’ll let the photographs speak for themselves.
